3 Simple Tips for a Cohesive Bathroom Design

Creating a design that is cohesive has been a struggle for me for a long time. Even if I could do one room, I struggled with carrying that throughout my house. I felt like I needed a brand new, start-from-scratch design in each room and that’s just not the case.

Throughout the process of planning the renovation for The Jane Project, I learned ways to create that cohesiveness in a room and in a house. Here are 3 of my tips for creating a cohesive bathroom design that anyone can do!

Carry Details Across Zones

I used to fear being too matchy-matchy. But here’s the truth: that does not apply to your home. This took me a very long time to come to terms with. I know the vibe I like, but when I try to mix too many styles, I end up with something completely different from what I had in mind.

Through designing this house, I realized that matching isn’t bad — it’s what creates cohesion. Repeating colors, textures, and fixtures throughout your home helps establish flow and balance. It creates harmony, and that harmony truly impacts your wellbeing. A harmonious home = a harmonious you (give or take a few life factors, of course).

Fixtures are one of the hardest design decisions to make because there are so many options out there. My #1 fool-proof tip is to shop from a coordinated collection. That way, all your metal tones and finishes are guaranteed to match. I used the Lexia collection from Signature Hardware throughout this home–faucets, towel ring, robe hooks, shower system, toilet paper holder–everything. I could get in that collection, I got to match. I even tried to match the kitchen faucet to the bathroom fixtures (here’s a sneak peek!)

Anchor with a Color Pallet

I want my bathroom to be a peaceful escape from the world–a place to rest and reset. So, I will forever be team neutral in a bathroom. I mean I’m usually team neutral but, you know what I mean. Even if you prefer a bolder look, I would encourage you to stick in an earthy, neutral color pallet for the more permanent (or semi-permanent depending on how you see the world) elements like tile, vanities or flooring. Those are the foundations that shouldn’t have to change with every season. When you start with a neutral base, you can add color and personality in easy, low-commitment ways–like towels, artwork and florals. Whatever pallet you choose, stick to two to three main colors and repeat them throughout your bathroom design. It’s one of the simplest ways to make your space look cohesive and intentional.

Choose Your Statement Feature

You don’t want multiple pieces competing to be the star of the show. Instead, choose one big statement feature to get all the attention, and let the rest of the design play supporting roles. I’m tempted to say that the Elmdale vanity is the star of our show–but it’s not. I don’t think you can truly appreciate how transformative the illuminated Faysel mirrors are until you walk into the room. There’s this subtle pull that makes you want to linger and soak in the space. That’s why I’d say the mirrors are our statement piece. They quite literally make the entire room what it is.
